Project 52 : Week 27 - Patriotic

Someday the 4th of July will be enjoyable with kids, right?! Between the rain, the smoke and all the loud BOOMS, the boys were not in a very patriotic spirit this year. Most of our {short-lived} time doing fireworks involved this scene - at least one kid covering their ears and/or screaming.

I think next year we will have to go to a festival and fireworks show instead and hopefully they will like that better. What does your family do? Is there an awesome Kansas City area show that you LOVE?

A note about my settings and setup (shot in manual mode).

  1. To bring the full attention of this photo to Bryce I chose a very small aperture of f/2.2 so the background would be blurred out. I could have gone down a bit more but I know my lens (Canon 35mm f/1.4) isn't super sharp at lower f-stops so I didn't push it.

  2. The skies were very overcast with intermittent rain showers to the light was sparse. I set the ISO to 1250 to help bring in more light. There is a bit of noise (you can see it most on his face and arms) but it doesn't distract too much from the photo.

  3. He wasn't moving very much so I didn't need a very fast shutter speed but to get the exposure correct I had to speed up the shutter to 1/1600. I should have lowered the ISO and slowed down the shutter speed in order to keep the same exposure but reduce the noise.

  4. While I don't love the distractions in the background (yellow cab car, Papa walking behind him, the upside down umbrella), they add to the story of the day. Can you see the smoke in the upper right hand corner from the fireworks?
