International Babywearing Week 2018 - Kansas City Family Photographer

Babywearing was a huge part of my life with young babies and toddlers and I sometimes miss it now that my boys are older. Especially as a new mother, babywearing provided a great bonding for us and was just practical as well. Then as a second time mother it became necessary to survive those early days with a newborn while managing a 2 year old at home.

The Kansas City Babywearing Society (formerly Babywearing International of Kansas City) was a HUGE help to me as I started (and continued) my babywearing journey. The host meetings once a week at locations all around the Kansas City area and are a wealth of knowledge. You can learn about the different types of carriers, try on carriers at the meeting, get help with a carrier you already own, check out a carrier to take home and "try it before you buy it" for a month and are a great community of fellow moms (and dads) to connect with.

On their Facebook page and group, you can get even more help if you need something while you're at home and have a question or need a fit check. I highly suggest all new parents check them out and become involved.

International Babywearing Week was started "to promote babywearing as a universally accepted practice, with benefits for both child and caregiver, through education and support." Started in 2008, this event strives to promote babywearing organizations and build community through local event hosted throughout the world.

The 10th annual celebration started on Monday, October 1, 2018 and to celebrate the KCBWS hosted a kick-off picnic at Loose Park on Sunday, September 30th. As part of this event and to raise funds for their newly created independent organization, they held a photo-shoot fundraiser and asked me to be the featured photographer. I was thrilled that they asked me and was so excited to meet the families and be a small part of this event.

Sessions were 10 minutes each and the 6 families I met were so great. It was fun to see babies and toddlers of all ages - from 7 months to 4 years old. Seeing each parent-child relationship was amazing and so special to watch.

Almost all of the photos of I have of my kids and I babywearing are selfies and I wish I had photos like these to document this short time of their childhood. Would you love a mini-session like this, contact me and let's chat!
